I have a pretty new 440D2 and it keeps going out at low temps like 225 and 250. I started a 14 hour smoke at 3 am and ran great till about 8am before a flame out. I think the direct sunlight when the sun came up had something to do with it. I put it in the shade then it ran again for quite a long time like 3 hours and then went out again. Now it is unpredictable. Another time, 15 mins before it went out. I have to babysit this thing now. I am starting to mess with P settings but forums are telling me it only works for the smoke setting and others say different it is across the whole range. Others say p-mode works up till 250. I can always hear a fan, but there seems to be some secondary fan, like a jet like forced air fan that kicks in and out. When it kicks in, I know I am good. Other wise High temps seems ok. fluctuates + or - 50 degrees at high temp, but at least it doesn't go out. But then again high temp cooking never lasts any more then an hour. I started it clean with no pellets or ash in the pot either.

To get a somewhere near a stable 225. I am leaving the lid cracked about 2 inches with a metal prop and temp on 250, seems like 250 is more reliable then the 225 setting. I am not happy about this at all, but this is the only thing that is gimping this roast over the finish line. I am taking this back when this is all over. It is only a week old. Any other brand recommendations?

The P setting does only work in the Smoke setting and Pit Boss will confirm it. There is no secondary fan besides the fan on the auger which only supposed to keep the auger motor cool. To be Honest I replaced my PB controller with an after market controller and never had an issue since I replaced it. I like my Pro Series 1100 because of the size and the size of the hopper. The electronic components are so so, but people have had success with Pit Boss and not had a problem. I believe the majority of the issues are due to the Covid issue in China and which I believe they are pushing product too fast since factories were shut down. The quality and issues I am hearing are from recent purchases so it could be a rough time for PB.

I will stand by Pit Boss and hopefully they will get it back. They need a better controller and not this crap they have now. The Platinum series especially the Lockharts (sorry Lockhart owners) looks like it is cheaply made and not worth $700+ for it.

It sounds like you have combination of a bad controller and bad RTD. You have a choice to call Pit Boss to get a replacement or like you said take it back and find another model. The choices are up to you and your budget. I just bought a Yoder 640s Yfi and it is a beast I have done 4 cooks on it and the temps are very consistent and it does produce alot more smoke than PB controllers.

If you want to stay under $1000 look at Green Mountain Grills, Camp Chef, and Grilla Grillz. Stay away from Traeger it just an overrated grill and your just paying for the name or you can trust Pit Boss by calling them and having them send out replacement parts.

Do you have any links or recommendations for aftermarket controllers that you could share?

TIA!
