Hey all, so I've got an issue on my pitboss 850 ps2 from lowes. Anything bellow 250 it seems it will almost flame out sometimes during cooks but holds temp and until it re lights then runs clean for a while then i get almost a flame out again, which in return I get heavy dirty white start up smoke which makes the meat bitter. Pitboss sent me the updated control board but is way worse than the old controller. I take pellets out of the hopper every time and put them back in a sealed container. I clean the burnpot after each use also and clean temp probe also. Im currently running bear mountain brand pellets. And there any specific brand that these pitboss grills like or is it a controller issue? Thanks

Bear Mountain pellets are some of the best and work great in my 1100 PS. Is the controller updated with the Pit Boss app? Does it have any issues lighting when you first start it?

No start up issues at all. Yes I did update the new controller they sent though the app. But feed rates seem really off with the new controller...so I put the old one back in and it's way more consistent cleaner burning. But it seems like every 10 mins I almost get the flame out but it relights n keeps going. So I dunno maybe the temp probe isn't reading right. Not sending enough pellets. Not sure

Yeah, I would definitely contact pit boss and maybe they will have to just replace your grill.

Is your rain cap on your stack wide open?
Your rain cap on top of the chimney stack ... spin it up all the way to the top and run it wide open for the best air flow. It’s NOT a chimney damper like on a stick burner that you need to adjust to control the heat in the barrel, the awesome PitBoss controller constantly monitors the digital temperature probe readings and its algorithms runs the auger to regulate the heat in the barrel and the combustion fan runs constantly to help maintain the fire... so you don’t have to babysit it.

It is just a rain cap... wide open will give you the best air flow for a quicker startup and the best temperature maintenance. You can adjust it down some to maintain your barrel temperatures in extremely low temperatures.

Yes I took it completely off.

I have similar issues with a new controller and probe when I try and go really low, 200 or 225 on my 820. 200 is horrible, big puffs of white smoke and temp swings of 50deg (+/-25). 225 is a bit better with 30deg swings (+/- 15).

These numbers were taken with my Smoke Thermometer that I charted over a whole session. I clean the fire pit after every session or two and clean the PB probe after each smoke. I also have the stack vent just about all the way open. If I do not do all this, then it gets a lot worse. I have had swings +/- 50-70deg and the backyard looked to be on fire.

Clean out your smoker and clean the temp probe (I use a magic eraser and a alcohol wipe). See if it helps.
