My name is Lee Reiners. I live in Central Illinois. I just purchased a 1230 competition series combo wood pellet and gas grill smoker from Menards. We just assembled it over the weekend. I read all of the assembly and user directions. There is little to no information regarding the use of smoking features such as the searing control or using the gas side for smoking. What resources are available to learn more about these features on the 1230?

I have the 1600 comp as far as the smoking parts goes…it smoke ls it’s a oven it’s does all kinds of things I’ve made cakes to brisket…so I’m smoke setting you can change the p setting it changes how Often the auger goes for…p0 hotter p7 cloder… when you move the dial to a temp put the p setting back to default or a setting you like …but it changes the consistency of temperature could be good or bad depends on where you live and weather …so I would set it back to p4 when you move the dial…

go to the pit boss websight and you should be able to find all the info you need. Or google 1230 pit boss owners manual

When you set your temp you can increase the smoke if you hold the prime button a few min it works great…

My goal it to put in as much smoke as I can for the first 4 hours I use smoke setting and pick. P seeking that works for what you want changing the p setting will make the temp move you want it around 200 p0 it’s hot out p5 depends on all of things have to find what works best for you … feel free to pm me if you need help

The gas side is o lt for hot grilling
The smoke side is for smoking baking like smoke a steak until say 120 then sear it on your grill part or use the sear slide on the smoker and finish it like that it all depends on what you want to do

Your going to need to tighten the hood bolts down every few weeks so it’s a pain but besides that it worked great keep it clean deep clean every 2 weeks give or take and it should do ya great

Thanks. As I stated before, all of the manuals came with the grill. I just didn't find them very informative for smoking or details such as the searing plate and the smoke gate to the gas side. As you found also, I learned more in an hour of watching YouTube videos than reading both manuals cover to cover. I'm an engineer so I anticipated having to recheck bolts and screws for relaxation periodically. One of the common themes I've picked up on as you mentioned is do your maintenance and keep you grill clean and protected. As soon as we have a rain free day, I'm ready to start the pellet side.

That's great. I had no idea you could bake in them as well. Nice in the summer so you don't have to heat up the kitchen. Anyone do any cast iron Dutch oven cooking in their grill?
