I was going to clean and wire brush the drip pan to put some very high heat paint on it. The pan has more rust than I thought. On the end that doesn't get used much the the rust was real loose. I don't know if the rust is getting on the food like the ash was or not. I'm going to paint the top of the pan only as the bottom don't look so bad. I'm going to ask FDA or some body if this is safe having loose rust around or possibly on food. The drip pans cost over a 100 dollars. The people at pit boss know about this and their answer is not replaced until it falls apart which will probably happen a few months after warranty expires. I whish I would of waited and shopped elsewhere rather than Walmart. Every electronic part on that grill has been replaced including the board 3 times and temp probe twice and there was nothing wrong with those parts which I have saved.

Call Danson's is useless, are they going to magically stop rust, I don't think so. I've painted all kind of grills with no problem, in fact danson's sell paint.. I painted the top side only an heated it to 500 to set paint.. I put foil on top of it and it works fine. They don't warranty rust, and a new diffuser is over $100. The techs told me after 18 months that the fan runs at different speeds, so they can't stop rust.

They can’t but you can if you clean it and season it like it’s cast iron. Danson’s will replace it with in the 5 years of warranty.
So … The foil on top of the painted steel drip trapped the heat and moisture and caused the rust to happen all over again. What does the fan got to do with rust… sounds like you need to call back and ask for a supervisor cause the only fan that runs at different speeds is the tabletop.

I polished the metal and prepped it for paint. After it dried I got it real hot to set the pain. The paint will not trap moisture. It was probably the acid in the sauces that caused it to rust as fast as it did. the foil may trap a bit but it is for 1 use only and I clean it. Raw steel will rust especially when heat is involved. The reason I said something about the fan taking so long is to show how smart they are and you are saying they are wrong. Hmmmm !

The foil not the paint trapped the moisture and caused it to rust again. If seasoned properly raw steel will polymerize (like cast iron) and be sealed against rust.
