Hopper grid

I have a PB 850 from Lowe's. Is the grid on the hopper really necessary? Thinking of removing it so I can more easily access pellets.
No it is not, I removed mine on the first day. It's a safety feature but common sense says you shouldn't put your hand in there. The only reason to leave it is if there are little ones that might get curious. Welcome from NH 🍺 🍻

I did and if I had it to do over again I would only do a section big enough for my hand to fit. That way the temp probes could lay on top.

I don't have pictures at the moment, but I didn't want to remove it completely and lose it, and I didn't want to cut out the grid like some people do.

I removed the grid, put the screws back into the hopper and held them on with nuts, and then I just lay the grid on top. I can just lift the grid up with one hand, move the pellets around with my other hand when necessary, and then set the grid right back into the hopper.

If I ever sell my grill, I will just reinstall it like it was originally.

GREAT idea! I'm gonna go with that thought!

That is a great idea 💡

Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate it.

Here's what I did on my Austin XL. I wasn't sure if other models have the same design or not.

My grid was attached on 3 sides with 6 black screws and washers. I removed the grid and checked the threads on the included screws:

I dug up some 8-32 nuts and some washers:

Hand tightened them back into the holes on the hopper:

Set the grid on top:

Easy as that. No cutting the grid or losing it somewhere in your garage. I read somewhere that folks think that the grid adds a little structure to the hopper, which is why a lot of online advice say to cut out the inner grid and resecure the outside frame to the hopper (similar to Jimsmokes picture above). Personally, I don't think it is necessary, but that's just my opinion. I might be wrong. Good luck!

I did the same thing on my vertical
