Initial cure and burn off

I’m new to the smoking world and In the instructions for my smoker it says not to use flavored wood or water when curing but then says to add flavored wood and water and do the burn off? The model is the 2 series analog vertical smoker added a picture of the instructions

Did you also spray the interior with oil

I did on my 1150 after it had been heated past 350° for 45 min and had cooled to smoke temp. Then I turned it to high to see how hot it could get.

I used bacon/sausage grease on my 820
