Internal temp probe update?

Hello, I had bought a series 4 vertical, and after 2 weeks the internal thermometer did not work. This probe looked like a piece of metal that came out the back lip of the smoker inside.

I returned itand got a new one. This temp probe sits higher, and has a cage around it. I would assume one of these is a newer model. Does anyone know which one?

Yes, the newer model has a guard on it, that is the one I have on my Series 3. I think it is there to keep grease drippings, etc from getting on the probe.
