Was at Walmart today and it looks like the new version of the Austin XL has a PID controller. Same price as the old one as far as I can tell.

Yep, I was checking that out the other day too. Upgrades since the original are the PID controller, lever for the sear plate, and storage hooks for the upper grate. I think I mentioned in my other post that it still just needs a foldable front shelf and ash clean out system and it would be almost perfect for $500.

No sir.. P set means PSettings and that’s not a PID or hybrid controller .
That is the new ONYX line… just released. .
I'm not sure if you are correct. It looks like the same controller on the Competition Series, which is PID, and has a smoke mode which can be adjusted with the "P" setting.

I could be wrong, but they look the same and that is how the Competition Series works, I believe.

From the website:

"The PB1000NX has an advanced PID control board with P Setting at low temperatures for the ultimate controlled cooking experience. These settings allow you to adjust the machine to fit your environment or boost smoke density. The control board also features 5-degree increment settings to target indirect cooking temperatures ranging from 180 to 500°F."

Then it must be the new hybrid controller VST variable smoke technology… where it acts like a PID controller until you set it to S or 180 and then the PSettings are activated.

I just wanted to correct myself. Although it looks the same as the CS controller, it appears that the one in the Austin XL Onyx does not have WiFi. But the rest of the functionality is the same, I believe. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

As far as the comment about VST, I bet those are the models with the DC components (Pro Series Elite). I don't have any experience with those, but my guess is that it has a variable speed fan to provide even better control. But I really don't know. I just know that the new Austin XL still has the AC components, just like the original.

Pit Boss has so many different controllers. It's hard to keep up with all of the different functionality between product lines.

I have a new Austin XL Onyx and I can only get the “P” button to change setting between Fahrenheit and Celsius. I’m trying to change the factory setting to a P5 for more smoke. Any help is appreciated. Thx

Welcome from East Texas to the group!!
Try unplugging it then plug it back in and see what it does 🇺🇸🇺🇸
That’s what I had to do on my 820 when I first got it

Two things. First of all, make sure the controller is set at its lowest temp (180, I think). Also, just do a short push on the P button. If you hold it down, it changes temp units.
