New Pitboss Navigator Owner Question on Smoke

Hi All,

I’m new to the forum and pellet grill smoking. Got my first pit boss navigator 850 from Costco and did my first cook which was a pair of beef back ribs from Costco. They turned out amazing! However I noticed that my pit boss navigator was periodically producing batches of white smoke throughout my 8 hour cook. I read online that white smoke is dirty smoke and should be avoided. Also this white smoke should only be during start up phase and the rest of the cook should be clear blue smoke that is hard to see. I used Kirkland pellets. Anyone have any idea if the periodic white smoke I was getting is normal or not? If not any ideas on how I can fix it? My cook was 5 hours at 225 and then 2 hours wrapped at 275 and then last hour was bbq sauce on and 350. Any advice would be appreciated!

I just read its caused by moisture in your pellets...but if its only occasionally shouldn't have to worry...if it is continuous then you might be getting some bad smoke.

So far I've used pitboss competition blend and haven't had any white smoke beyond start up

Absolutely normal!! The puffs of smoke you’re seeing are from the pellets dropping into the firepot and smoldering. This is what happens to produce the actually blue smoke you want. The white smoke is what’s produced in copious quantities at startup.
