I used my Pit Boss Pro Series PBV4PS2 for the first time. I set the recipe for a temperature of 250. After 2 1/2 hours it still hadn’t reached temperature. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong?

The more you use it the more the controller learns. I had mine up to no time at 200 deg tonight.

Once the smoker got to 165 I put my pork chops in. They hit 145 and the smoker only reached 244. That was after 1 /12 hours. I think I was suppose to put them in once the smoker reached 250. I couldn’t wait for that. Hopefully things go better next week when I put some ribs on.

I've had the PBV4PS2 for a little over a year. I had problems getting it up to high temp at first. Then I read someone's comment on this forum about opening the door when you start it up. Hold the prime button in for a long time until you hear the pellets dropping into the burn pot. Then wait. He said to wait until you hear a sound like a jet engine. It's the fan, flaming the burn pot. With the door open, it apparently gets more oxygen and lights up faster. Then close the door. It comes up to temp pretty quickly after that, in my experience.

I have used three different brands of pellet smokers. I modified a Masterbuilt; I removed the MB pellet burner and added a GMG wifi unit. And added cold smoke gernerator for fish and jerky. But which ever unit I always clean the crucible and add one cup of pellets before reassembly. Start up the unit with the door open. When you are sure of ignition close the door and preheat to a temp 10-20* hotter than your planned cook temperature (also give your water pan time to achieve this temp). When temperature is balanced out, quickly place your products in the smoker, close the door and readjust cook temp to desired cook temp. Turn up the Hick-Hop and Open beverage!

I have the same smoker it sends out so much smoke trying to get to temp to where i have to unplug not sure why that happens.

This vertical smoker has a very low gain for its PID controller, so it is VERY slow to reach temps at very low settings. It is better to set it at 25-50degs above your setpoint and let it pre-heat.....then put your meat in and lower it to where you want to cook. Opening the door will lower the temp, but since you are pre-heated to a slightly higher temp, it will cool to your setpoint. Better to start warmer on this smoker in my opinion. Try it and see how that works.
