Following the most recent updates to the programming on my Series 4 vertical smoker, I finally had enough and swapped out the stock controller for a Camp Chef Woodwind Pro controller. Install was easy, both used Molex connectors, just had to combine the red and orange on the controller side to match the Pit Boss connector. I also fabricated a metal plate from 22 gage steel to mount the controller on. Also had to swap the temp probe, which is about 5in longer than the Pit Boss.
I’ve done a couple of 2-3 hour smokes with the new CC controller and like it so far. Definitely produces more smoke and super easy to use. I like the fan only setting, adjustable smoke output and 5 degree increments.

Love this....!! I installed a Reqteq controller in mine and love it...! But that Woodwind Pro controller looks amazing! Assume the App works well too....? Let us know how the performance is on it. Is it fast to get up to temp...? Controls well....?

So far, I really like the Woodwind controller. The app is really solid, zero connection issues on either WiFi or Bluetooth. A big improvement from the PitBoss. The app shows all the smokes and I can control everything except startup.
They really made the controller super easy to use, shows how long the start-up process is left, countdown on the shutdown and a total run timer. When starting the controller it asks for temp and smoke setting (1-10) then just takes it from there. A complete start up probably takes 25 minutes with an ambient temp of around 50-60 degrees and hot water in the water pan. Temp changes during the smoke are typically pretty quick, unless the smoke setting is 9 or 10. It seems to prioritize the smoke and a very gradual temp change.
I noticed that with the PB controller’s bad updates it was going through lots of pellets and didn’t have the same smoke output. The CC controller took care of that.
