I am new to using a smoker. Tonight I started using it and it started to raining. I have read two different answers 1. That I can use the smoker in the rain. 2. I should not use my smoker in the rain.

I have not had any problems but after the rains and cook is done I empty the pellets to be sure any that got wet are removed

Welcome aboard.
A $50.00 popup canopy does a good job of keeping the smoker going in the rain. Be mindful of the wind. I use 5 gallon buckets to weight it down.

Some kind of cover will help during smoking especially for keeping the pellets dry, once the pellets get wet they will expand and possibly clog the auger. Personally I have smoked in windy weather, rainy weather, hot weather, cold weather and snow. Wind and cold/ snow will extend your cook times
