Hey everyone first post here.
I have the sportsman, I think it’s an 800? It’s one year old.
Having an issue where it will feed pellets and the fan keeps going all out no matter what temp it’s set to. I can set it at 200 and because it just keeps a raging flame going it will be over 300 really fast and just keep going up unless unplugged. It would just burn itself down if you let it keep going.
This started after a thorough cleaning.

Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks!

What is the p setting on? When in smoke mode make sure it is set at p4. I would move the temp knob back and forth thru the temp settings if it has been sitting a while. Its just a potentiometer.. If the temp is set high it will feed pellets until it gets to that temp. You may have a bad controller. It an 820 sportsman. I have the same grill.

Make sure the controller wires are all plugged in
Could be the controller

The p setting is always on p4 I’ve never changed it. It doesn’t seem to matter what I set it on, the fan is always going full speed

sounds like a controller issue. I would take the bottom off of the hopper and check the board you can take the hopper off to get to everything to see. I would start by unplugging and then plugging everything back in to see if this helps it. I wonder how they set them at the factory as far temp setting. To bad there isnt some sort of factory reset on them, or is there? I might have to call and ask.

Maybe try cleaning the temperature probe, the one on the left inside wall. Also, I've just recently started changing from P4 to P1 and the temperature stays mostly within 5 degrees.

i think i might try that next time, doesnt that mean its feeding pellets more? I checked my instructions and it will get hotter the lower you put the "p" setting on by burning more pellets. The auger will be off for 18 seconds and come on for 70 on the p0 setting . Im going to try p3 and see if I get more consistant temps. Going real low may cause creosote build up and will burn more pellets. I know one thing, when you turn it up on high after your done cooking to burn of the grills you can look in the hopper and see the pellets going down quick!

I just read on the pit boss web sight that the "p" settings only work in smoke mode and the temperature is what controls the auger after that.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that you can only change the p settings while in the smoke mode. Once reset the new setting will be that setting until you go back to smoke mode to change it again or when the grill is turned off. P4 is the default and when it's turned on again it goes to the default...🤷‍♂️(yeah, I know, it's crazy or is it me??)

no thats correct. The p setting only works in smoke mode per the instruction manual. You can raise the temp in smoke mode by lowering the number which in turn feeds pellet at a different time rate.
