DId you put it on the smoke setting first till the smoke cleared out after about 5 to 7 minutes before putting it on the temp setting. If you skipped this step and went right to the temperature it will feed pellets till it gets to that temp if its a barrel type smoker like a pit boss 820 or bigger. That is what is stated in the manual and the pit boss websight.
