Saturday's smoked Ham was a bust. Temperature readings were erratic and the smoker shut down with ErL error codes 4 times before I gave up. It was the first smoke of the year and I pulled the Pit Boss Pro Vertical Smoker out, filled it up, and am ready to throw it out. I've been trying for three years.

What I've found by instrumenting the smoker with K Type Thermocouples is that as the Temperature rises above 350F the readings on the display crap out and state that the probe is disconnected and then the smoker shuts down with a Low Temperature Error Code. I've already replaced the control board and the RTD device. In the past I've been able to get by if I limit the smoke temperature to about 200F and start slowly ie start on Smoke, then go to 150, then 175, then 200. If I started on Smoke and went to 200 it would overshoot and shut down with an ErL error message.

Both the RTD and the external probes supplied exhibit the same behavior where they show disconnected above 350F. So its an issue with the circuit in the controller board.

On Saturday the smoker readings were jumping around 200F, 175F, 250F, etc reading to reading. So it might be a connection issue too. However staring it on smoke, closing the door as soon as we have smoke, and slowly adjusting Temperature up every 15 minutes to 200F should not result in 350F temperature readings. I sat there and watched the readings jump with a high reading of 250F followed by 175F and ErL.

I was never able to run at 400F, 350F, 300F, or even 250F without having the smoker go ErL. To claim that we can bake with this device and advertise 150 to 400F is false.

I have model BPV4PS1 purchased about 2 to 3 years ago. I've had it apart. I've cleaned it with vinegar, I've replaced the controller board, I've replaced the RTD, I've cleaned out the auger after having pellets glue themselves in because I couldn't get to it within a week of using it. Now I completely empty it after each smoke. The smoker is stored in a shed, out of the rain and snow. Pellets are bagged and sealed.

If I ever buy another one, it will have a switch to run the auger to clean it out. It will also have a gate to open the firebox from below to clean it out instead of having to use a vacuum or tip the unit over. And I will wait for reviews stating that it controls temperature properly.

Did you call customer service? My PBV4PS2 works fine.
The last time I called they sent me a whole new controller and a new RTD and they behaved the same way. Maybe your S2 has a different circuit that doesn't see the probes as missing when they reach 350F?

Can you set your smoker to 350 or 400 and run at these temperatures? I would call them if they fixed it so I could smoke a pizza.

Can you smoke at 250 or 300F? Sometimes I want to cook instead of smoke.

Can you set it at 150 or 175 and leave it for hours? I don't want my sausage to go above 185 as then the fat would leach out and leave the sausage greasy.

I have done sausage at 175, pork butt at 200, salmon at 200, brisket at 200. But at 225F I always get ErL. Tired of that. Saturday I got ErL at 150F. Tired of that too. If I have to tear it apart and change out the PCB then I want to know ahead of time that its worth the phone call and the wait and the time to get the part and the time to install it.

S1 vs S2?
you mentioned your model PBV4PS2 works fine. My model is BPV4PS1. Its possible that the PCB and SW in your model has been fixed. Though maybe your version has replaced obsolete parts and lower priced components. It would be nice to know if you can run yours at 250F, 300F, 350F or 400F without it shutting down. My model never could.

Yes, mine can run at those temps just fine.

I wasn’t aware of an earlier version of the same model. Interesting. Anyway, yes mine has been running at any and all temps without shutting down.
When did you purchase that and does the S1 have a 5 yr warranty?

Lets see. We purchased it at least before the last two or three 4th of Julys. About a dozen Salmon fillets, three or four Briskets, a dozen Pork Butts, 80 lbs of Smoked Sausage, dozens of Racks of Ribs, and a few Turkey Breasts ago. I'll have to look it up.

I'ld like to hear from someone with my model though to see if they were able to get it to work. There are still many threads on ErL, Er1, Erl. I have not seen anyone else discuss the fact that at least my smoker appears to mistakenly display the Temperature probes as disconnected when the Temp is high and before going into shutdown and displaying ErL. Smoking isn't rocket science. There is definitely an issue with the two Controller boards that Pit Boss provided me. I bet I'm not the only one.

Maybe pit boss had a run of bad temperature probes and controller and you got two of them. I'd keep calling for a third controller and temperature probe.

That sucks, I dont have that smoker, I have a Pro series 1600 had nothing but problems with it, like you they sent me parts to rebuild their POS 2 different times, after more than 10 hours on the phone multiple times with customer service, I returned it exchanged for a brand new one, and it works hmmmm, imagine that, some things are just lemons and it pisses me off when they want to say it's user error!

I must agree. Having same problems. I am giving my unit away to who ever wants it. Waste of Money and Time.

I’m pretty sure the K type T/C wire could be a problem. Type K is for temps above 1,000, type J is for temps below 1,000. I’ve dealt with both on industrial melting furnaces.
