Firmware Update for Pit Boss Pro Series 850?

Yes, the control board does have the same increments as the PB1150PS2 now.

I just bought my 850 on Saturday and the 3 times that I started it, it would just rip full blast and the fan never turned off. Would get up over 500 degrees each time.

I actually messaged with Miranda R who only told me I was starting up wrong (I wasn’t). Started a new chat after trying again and explained my issue and the the guy asked if my controller went from 200-300 in 10 degree increments. I told him it was 25 degree increments and he sent me out a new controller to put in. We will see how that goes when it gets here.

Welcome to the group. Sadly you must have gotten one of the old models. Many of us have replaced the old controller and love the new temperature increments. Good luck and good smoking.

My SmokeiT app can adjust in 10° increments but the controller on the smoker jumps from 250 to 300°. Do you have a to call pitboss and have them send you a new controller all together or they won’t ever work together?(App & smoker) Having the smoker connected to WiFi doesn’t do anything for controller updates?

I'm in the complete opposite. I had a new controller put in and I have 10 degree increments up to 300 but on my app its 50 degree increments.

I have to say I know I have more pricey model comp 1600 but I have no issiues but I have a pid controller deff worth the money

Just got off the phone with support. They are shipping me a new board for my 850. Wow... after 2 years I'll finally WANT to use the dang thing.

Long overdue update! Got the new 10-degree increment controller, I did not have to send in my old one. Works great in terms of keeping temp and actually being able to cook at 270, or 375 who would of thought someone wanted to cook between 350 and 400??!! All sarcasm aside, it did its job and it's doing it well. Can't wait to throw a larger piece of meat on it and take it for a long cook test drive. One issue I had was the Smoke IT app, it did not like the new controller and was making the grill do goofy temp read outs, so I uninstalled it and will just get a Wi-Fi probe for when I do my long cooks, I'm sick of that app and don't want to give it any more of my time.

I understand the frustration with the Smoke-it app. Every time you look at it or touch the screen it suddenly changes... best not to use it until they fix it.

I think we 850 owners need to start pressuring Pit Boss to the point they concede that their controllers need to be updated like the ones on the 1150. Maybe with enough calls about that temperature GAP, the missing NEEDED temperature settings they might get something going. I like to cook at 250* a lot and when set to 250* it really is only at 220* - 230*, so I play the same game you do to try to keep 250* , turn up to 300* (gets too hot) then turn down to 250* (really 230*) just to maintain 250* App Assist told me that they probably will eventually but it won't be for a while. So maybe WE need to push them a little harder.
If we had 10 degree increments, that would solve the problems like we are having.

Another update, or question for the peeps that have had their updated controllers for awhile now. Does anyone's controller indicate that the ignitor is on in the middle of a cook? It seems to do this multiple times and also seems like the fan decreases in RPM just by hearing it. Just wondering if this is usual operation to help maintain the temps. Thanks

The Pit Boss grills are good but their WiFi app leaves a lot to be desired. Now that they have an in house app team I hope they get it right with future updates.

Yea. I didn’t read far enough initially. It looks like a lot of the problems have been resolved. I am probably going to pick one up this week.

I contacted Pit Boss Customer Care Team at 480-923-9630 today. The whole phone call was 15 minutes in length including almost 10 minutes of wait. Their representative was extremely helpful and quick. I advised I was inquiring about the updated control board for the Pro Series 850 PBS2 (purchased from Lowe's 02/2021) that had the 10 deg increments. She asked for my serial, demographics, and then advised the new updated control board is covered under warranty and set it to be shipped out. Emailed replacement instructions right away.

Will update upon arrival and installation if any issues continue to occur.
