I do a lot of quick smoke cooks that don’t spend enough time in the smoker to get that nice Smokey flavor to its full potential. Like smoked burgers, wings etc. Usually an hour or so is how long they spend in the smoker before it’s time to pull. My plan around that short smoke period is getting pellets that are heavy and bold in smoke flavor. Currently my system is to run charcoal pellets for an hour or so then crank it up for the sear. I’m thinking the charcoal pellets will be heavy but since it’s a shorter period it won’t spoil anything. In your opinions, what are some heavy smoke flavor pellets? Also am I the only one that gets a decent flare up in the auger when I use charcoal pellets on high heat? Twice already I’ve had scary moments where fire got in the auger. Only with charcoal pellets. Which I guess it makes sense because it’s more flammable than non-burned wood.

was looking at sourcing charcoal pellets to try, read a few reports they put out low smoke

I use pit boss comp blend , it sears well

on short smokes i use a smoke tube maybe try that with a wood pellet

i use this one and really only the short tube
That’s a good idea, I never thought of that. My next Amazon order will probably include one

I use Bear Mountain pellets, consistently best smoke.
I keep seeing that brand pop up on this forum. How much of a difference does pellet brand selection make? I mean they’re all making the same product so how much variation can there be? And I’m talking specifically this category, not brand to brand about (insert any other brand vs brand in literally any consumer category). It’s just powdered wood

I guess that I can’t talk specifically about the engineering behind the pellets. I can tell you that I’ve tried Pit Boss, Kirkland’s, Lumber Jack and Ol Hick. Best smoke flavor with Bear Mountain, Lumber Jack is second, Ol Hick third from my experience. I was not impressed with Pit Boss and Kirkland’s and will not be purchasing them again.
Remember, everyone’s tastes and likes are different. It takes some experimenting to find what you and your family like. There’s also the variable of your smoker and how you have it setup.

As an example, there are 12 varieties of Hickory trees in North America. Each one will have a distinctive flavor. So that bag of "Hickory" pellets comes down to the tree it was made of.

I just ordered a smoke tube because of another persons recommendation. Can’t wait to try it out.
Personally, I use only chips in my smoke tubes. I find that it ups the smokiness much more compared to using pellets or belnded. Downside is the burn out quickly. Maybe an hour on a 12” tube. That might be perfect for you on short cooks.
