Pit Boss 1600 controller update

To get to 350 now about 20 - 25 minutes, 400 was maybe 30 at the most, it also spring temps so cooler.

Also one thing to think about the 1600 is one of the largest grills for that price.

One trick would be to set at a higher temp to get to 400 faster.

I had an 1100 that I loved, I was worried that I might have made a mistake but once I had the update man I make up reasons to smoke something now. All the reasons you list are worth it especially the ash clean out.
Okay you sold me. I'll give it a shot. I'll give PB a call in the morning and get the PID update process started. Guess Easter prime rib will be on the egg instead of the new 1600...oh well.

That was the longest week for me but it was worth it.

I personally think the temp is more stable than the 1100 so much I have had to adjust my smoking style, I used to give a little extra time time, now I take it off when it's at the temp or it will be over done.

Ok, so this is going to sound really stupid but how did you get the bottom access panel off? The screw heads seem really soft and don't want to budge. It feels like im going to strip the heads out.

I had this same problem when I had to have my controller replaced for the 850. There was no way in Hell that these screws were coming out so I had to really pry on the tabs with the thinnest screw driver I had. Maybe Pit Boss should build tanks instead???

So you got yours out from the front not the bottom? Did you have any damage?

If you must get the phillips heads out, do you have one of these?

Also remember, Japanese Industrial Standard heads are shaped differently than the traditional Phillips heads that we are used to. A standard Phillips head screwdriver will work if its not overly tight, but if it's tight (like most things Japanese are
:evil
) then save yourself alot of swearing and pick up a set of JIS screwdrivers.

Thanks for the reply. I dont have one of those. PITBOSS just told me to drill the screws out and they would send new ones. But I dont know about that either......

I got mine out through the front. I was lucky that I only damaged the outside of the bad controller. The new one snapped right in. I saw a video on Youtube showing how to remove the controller. It showed where the clips are. That's where I was able to gently pry.

I doubt Thor's hammer would've opened the bottom.

Good Luck...

I had one that was really hard to come out, but they do come out, just make sure you are using the right size tip.

Now I am REALLY baffled???

I fired up the 1600 last night and it took about 50 minutes to get to 300 which is a drastic improvement from the 2.5 hours it took the first time. It got pretty late so I put it through the shut down cycle and went to bed.

Not sure of myself I decided to do another burn this morning just to confirm my results.

This morning I went through the process again. This time it took exactly 31 minutes (not including approx 5 minutes from initial start to flame in chamber) to get to 300.

Nothing has changed. Outside temps are very similar all three days (26-31 degrees). Same pellets, same OE equipment inside the grill each time.

I have it at 300 right now and holding steady as a rock. Since I have it going I am going to go through FIRETEAM 6's suggested cycle of up and down every 40 minutes and see what happens.

Anyone care to take a guess as to why the "improvement" each time I fire it up? I've seen comments that the PID can "learn." Do we know that for sure? Does the 1600 have Artificial Intelligence? Is it sentient and will it eventually decide to eat my brisket and enslave me?
