I wasn't fully starting it up properly. You must turn it on and leave it open for a minimum 10 to 15 minutes and the smoke stack needs to be opened up. I had mine closed thinking I was going to contain the smoke better. So in essence I wasn't letting it get going at all. I just did my first smoke today properly, had a decent smoke ring but not the flavor I am used to with the stick burners. So I have to add the smoke ring definitely.

I didn't even think of that as an issue. Now, had I seen your smoker with the stack closed, I would have said "oh, yeah -- open that up". When I bought my first smoker -- I thought the same thing -- if If closed all the vents, the smoke will stay in there -- forgetting I needed heat, fuel and AIR.

Now that you have that case solved, you can experiment with pellets brands and types, etc.

So far, I have loved the pellet smoker. I don't get any complaints about over smoking - which was always hard for me to detect after I spent all day covered in smoke and then not being able to tell the difference when I ate.

Closing down your smoke cap all the way down.

Choking out the air, will choke the fire and thus smoke. It seems like it would trap more smoke in the cabinet - but there's not enough air.

i have the PB 4 and i use the smoke tube and find its the ticket to getting a real good flavor
