i put mine to the side of the smoker, I’ve tried putting it also right under the meat but I was afraid it would catch fire and end up moving it.
I also mix the the smoke tube with wood chips too. Works well. Never had it go out.
I do make sure I let it burn for 5 min before I blow it out and put it in the smoker.
