1150 Pro Temp Issue (As Nauseum)

I got an email today stating:

Thank you for your recent purchase of the Pit Boss Pro Series grill from Lowe’s. We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review on lowes.com documenting your experience. We have identified an issue with some of our grills holding temperatures in the mid-range and have come up with a firmware update to the controller to help these grills perform better in this range.
We are very excited about this new line of Pit Boss grills and want to make sure that the grill is working well for you. If you could please reply to this email with the issues you are experiencing, I will personally make sure that we work to get your grill running so that you are able to cook dinner for your family and enjoy the features of the Pro Series grills.”

so we will see.
Follow up email stating.

We have a new program that I can set you up with, I will send a return label to have controller sent to me to reprogram then returned to you within 5-7 days, the label will come with instructions on removing controller. This is at no charge to you.

Well it took them long enough so lets hope it works.

Funny that they said at the end "of no charge to you". Like really, you expected me to pay for something that never worked.

There has been an update to your case:

Hello,
If you're having issues with the grill holding temp on the lower settings, there is a 3 step burn off process we'd have you do. If after this you're still having issues, please let us know as we have a plan in place to reprogram the board.
If you do this in a single day, expect it to take about 5 hours.
Set the grill directly to 350 instead of Smoke and run it at that temp for 40 minutes. After that, drop the grill down to 200 and let it run for an additional 40 minutes. Shut the grill down and let it cool down. After that, turn the grill back on to 350 for another 40 minutes, then down to 225 for 40 minutes and shut it down again after that. Then start up to 350 for a final 40 minutes, then down to 250 for 40 minutes. After that's been done, the board should "learn" from that and your temps may be more in line. This will take a bit of time, but there have been quite a few people who've stated this works very well for them.
Please reply directly to this email or give us a callback if you have anymore issues.
Thank you!

Folks have tried that in another group I belong to and it also didn't work for a majority of them.

That’s definitely not gonna work... and your gonna blow 5 hours of your life and 20 bucks in pellets getting all frustrated. That tech probably didn’t get the memo that they can stop BSing people and start issuing return labels.

I agree with you 100%

From what I understand that 3 step process doesn't work. People still have problems with it and it will need to be sent off. A waste of time and pellets. I wouldn't bother trying and just call them and say it didn't work.

Well I got ahold of Pit Boss this afternoon and was told that who ever said to try to do the burn off in was not correct. Supposedly they stopped doing that once the revised firmware was out. I was also told that only the updated firmware had the different temperature settings and it was not being offered on the newer 1150 pros.. hmm I guess we'll see if it works, I'm hoping that it does... I'll keep you all posted...

the new firmware is not being offered on the new 1150 or it is only for the 1150

Wait can we be a bit more specific? So they are saying they intend to have three separate models of PB1150PS2 out in the wild? So the original first models with PID problems, the first models with upgraded firmware (and different cooking temps) and then new PB1150PS2 models without the upgraded firmware? Why wouldn't they ship out new units with the upgraded firmware? Talk about confusing!! They are really stepping in it this time.

Pit Boss is sending me a 2-day label to send my controller back. THANKGOSH. Has anyone had theirs updated and used it yet?

This doesn't work! Just tell them that you did it, and what you want your controller reprogrammed. I'd love to know who this worked for! I sent my controller off yesterday fro reprogramming.

I picked up a PBV4PS2 today, and after initial burn, decided to take a look at the controller. It's based on a SONiX SN32F7051BF, which is basically STM32 architecture. It has a programming header.

And, I'll bet all the BT/WiFi PID controllers are essentially the same, other than minor layout changes (850/1150 are horizontal, PBV4PS2 is vertical), although they could certainly have different firmware for the different models. The BT/WiFi is handled by a separate ESP32-WROOM. It's a bit odd they used the SN32, since the ESP has much more FLASH, RAM and i/o. For what they're doing, it only lacks decent analog to digital converters, but they almost certainly could have added on for less cost then the SN32. Anyway, the hardware should be able to support OTA upgrades, but it would be pretty involved, so they probably haven't implemented it. BTW, the controller is from t2Fi.

One thing I did find, it does serve a web page which asks for name and password. Wonder what that does?
Mike, wish they would just post the compiled flash, so we could do it ourselves....would be nice not to have to have it sent in for a week.

So you just hit it's IP address for the web page...? Bet that login and password with not see the light of day.....LoL. Would be great if it had troubleshooting data that could be monitored as the cooker climbed in temperature. Keep us posted if you find out anything else.
