Barrel Thermometer

Has anyone installed a thermometer like this on the barrel and calibrated the thermometer on the PID to it? Is it possible, and if so, has it been successful? I purchased the smokeslikeaboss diffuser mod and deflector mods to correct the wild temp swings, but just curious if adding a thermometer on the barrel itself just above the center of the grates (on the lid) would help at all, like a traditional grill has.

If you are talking about the temperature probe that the controller goes by, then it's no. Their nonadjustable. It's a thermistor which converts temperature into an electrical resistance that the controller can read and make adjustments to get to or maintain your set temperature you chosen.
Thermometer for your barrel pictured, is nice but will only measure the temperature in that area, same as with the temperature probe wherever it is mounted.
