Hello. I have a Pit Boss Vertical 4 Pro grill. Yesterday the grill stopped working. It shows an error Err with a flashing ignitor icon. I removed the ash clean out tray. Turned on the smoker and checked the igniter with my hand. It was warm. What could this be?

Welcome from Texas to the group !
If that is your exact code "Err" your Temperature Probe wires are not making a connection
Check all of your connections first.
It also could be the igniter or the controller
Hopefully this helps you. Let me know what you find 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Your controller has a new feature… pretty new to PitBoss. It’s an auto relight feature and whenever your barrel temperatures drop to a certain set point below your dial setting temperature, the igniter will activate to stop a possible flameout. Depending on your model of PITBOSS you may see the Igniter symbol come on during a smoke session… that the auto relight feature at work.

If it kept your smoker running, then it did its job and there’s no problem. It is fine and absolutely normal for your smoker.

If it throws the igniter ERROR and goes into shutdown, unfortunately that’s a known controller issue. Call customer service at 480-923-9630 Or 877-303-3134 for a replacement controller.

Smoke On!

Had exactly the same error, flashing ignitor icon and shutting down on my Lexington Onyx Edition. Customer service said it sounds like a controller problem. I said, but the ignitor icon is flashing. He says the controller is the brains. I said okay. Took over a month to get the controller, in between multiple calls, asking where is my replacement controller. Anyway I install the new controller. Fire it up and got the same error. So I'm thinking it's the ignitor that's bad, like I originally thought, and not wanting to wait another month for a replacement ignitor, I ordered a replacement ignitor off Amazon for $13. Got it in 3 days. It fixed the problem. I sold the Lexington and bought a 1250 Platinum. Here's a link to the ignitor.

I had the exact same issue with mine. Turned out to be the igniter. I would contact PB if your unit is still under warranty but I would order one from Amazon while waiting for the warrantied parts. It took me about 10 days to get the one from PB.

And you had the same smoker?

And changing the igniter only worked? Awesome!

No I have a Lexington smoker but it was doing the same as yours. Intermittently it would just shut down and flash the Err with the flashing igniter icon flashing. The CS person I talked to at PB said that the igniter probably had a crack in it from the shipping but I thought it had to be the control panel with the way it acted. I was wrong. I did go ahead and order an extra igniter after the one PB sent that fixed the issue. Mine is working great now. It’s a pretty simple job to install the igniter.

Seeing that he’s got the auto relight feature on his Vertical 4 and you don’t on your Lexington, let’s cross our fingers that they’re right.

It doesn’t say that it has auto relight but the igniter is energized on mine anytime the temperature drops below set temperature. It (the igniter) goes on and off while using it.
The igniter is cheap enough to try and it will probably need one eventually.

Hello. Thank you very much! I'm glad to join your group!
I've checked the wires. Everything is connected. Igniter, auger, and fan. When I press the power button, the auger spins, the igniter starts heating up, and the fan works. After 10 seconds, the system shuts down, and the err light comes on the panel, with the igniter blinking.

If you look at the igniter with some magnification, you can possibly find the crack in it. Mine looked like a scratch on it but closer examination showed it to be a crack. If you can find one locally, that would be better than having to order it. They are $15 or so and may fix the problem without further delay. I was sick when mine failed after only having it for 2 weeks.

That's correct. I recently had the controller replaced, and after that, problems started. I can't connect to the controller via WiFi, and the system gives an igniter error 10 seconds after startup.
