Pit Boss Pro Series 4 V2 PBV4PS2

Just bought this smoker this past weekend. Did the burn off as suggested. It had no trouble getting to 350-400. Synced up the app to my phone and it seems to work ok. Smoked a nice brisket yesterday which turned out to be the best one I have ever done. (previously used a Green Egg and Weber "bullet style" charcoal smoker) At about the end of my cook, the controller suddenly changed the temp to "HIGH" and the temp shot up to 400 degrees. I noticed it and since the meat had hit the target temp anyway, I just shut the thing down. Anybody else see this happen?

I have the same smoker and never had it switch to high by itself. After a long smoke, doing a burn off, my water pan went dry and the temperature did shoot up quick, but I added more water and finished the burn off.
I'd keep a close eye on it next time you use it and if it does it again call Pit Boss Tech Support 877 303 3134 option 2. Might be a bad controller issue.

I only saw this once when I was using/learning the app, but not sure if it was a bug with the app or I inadvertantly did something. Also I think it was with the legacy app.

Howdy all,

I got a new one from Lowe's a few weeks ago. Same issue with taking an hour or so to get up to temp.

I called support and they went through the usual "did you read the manual; you have to keep the door open" kind of stuff. Called another time, different rep, didn't really shed any light.

Any news on this issue?

PS - my firebox/ash tray sticks out about 1/2" from the front of the main unit so I can't screw in the little lock screw. Anybody else have this problem?

You’ll need to try moving the tray around a bit. It needs to sit flush on the front of the smoker. Make sure the screw from the bottom isn’t in the way.

Fire pot has to be fully inserted and screwed in with the thumb screw. I'd get help and tip it some backwards and see what's binding on you. Maybe the bracket that holds the fire pot got installed wrong?

OK. So I flipped the unit over giving me access to the firebox, etc. Found that things didn't quite line up properly. Unscrewed everything, put it back one piece at a time to find out why the firebox was sticking out. (1), misaligned screw holes from the factory. I enlarged the holes so I could move things to the right places. (2) Found that the igniter was pushed back slightly (away from the firebox). Re-aligned it fully forward, re-assembled everything. Now the unit starts up quicker and reaches 350 in about 20 minutes (ambient temp was around 50F at the time)

HTH

Hey all, so I have had this smoker for about a month and am having all the se issues with temperature holding. Mine however is different. I can get the temp up to 300 not problem but when. I try and turn it down to 250 after the preheat I drops slowly but goes all the way to 190 and will finally stop and hold a temperature there. Am I doing something wrong by not letting it hold at 300 for an extended period of time or is this common for some other people as well. I was gonna reach out to pitboss but they will most likely tell me the same things the manual says. Maybe I am better off to just set my initial temperature to 225 /250 what I normally want rather than trying to go higher. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

Before I smoke I set it up to about 325 to 350 basically to sanitize things. I had no problem doing that and then going down to my set smoke temperature after a while.

Yea I got er up to 300 no problem then dropped it to 250, it went down then kept going down till 188/190 stayed there a while then I cranked it back to 300 and it began to rise and I got it to stay at 240 for about 30 min then it randomly started dropping again. It was 20 celsius today and a bit of wind but nothing crazy to knock a flame out I would think. I might contact support and see what they have to say it's frustrating to say the least since I gotta babysit to make sure the temp will hold where I want. It would reach the set temp eventually after forcing a temp increase but it wouldn't hold there so it was an up and down kinda cook. This is fine for a couple hours and I could suck it up but no way I would be able to do a 6 or 8 hour without constantly watching and adjusting as needed.

The only time I’ve had to work at getting stable temps was during the winter in much colder weather than 20C, Sounds like a call to tech support is in order. If you do so, let us know what they say.

make sure your fire pot is clean and check your cap you might want to open it a little

I recently purchased this and am doing my first smoke today.

I'm not the most technically gifted person but the build was fairly straight forward. I followed the instructions for priming and first burn off.

Half way through the first smoke I got a pellet error. The hopper was about 1/3rd full and I'm using pit boss brand pellets. I shut the unit down, emptied the fire box, and gave the pellets a stir. It appears to have started up again no problem although I've lost an hour or so and getting back up to temp might take a while.

My fire box does not sit flush at the front, there is about 1mm clearance. I'm not sure which screws are causing the issue but I'd appreciate any guidance as to which ones other people had to adjust.

Thanks. The chicken turned out great. The ribs were full of flavour but tenderness could have been better. Losing the heat right after I'd wrapped wasn't ideal but they were all eaten very quickly and I got lots of positive feedback. I've got some beef short ribs and a pork butt lined up next.
