Rust Bucket

This is the $1199.00 horizon I was talking about! Both grates and firebox grate is rusted. Would you pay that price for this grill?
That looks like the firebox and cook chamber are a 1/4 thick. If I was wanting a offset stick burner and it was the size I wanted. I'd buy it without hesitation. That rust would burn off during seasoning.

exactly! This thing is built like a tank and that is just surface rust and will clean off or burn off with no problem. I dont have a concern over the surface rust on the pit boss because I think it is just surface rust. I have looked at a lot of grills and they all have rust on them.

The heat defused and sear plate have surface rust no big deal. How do you keep yours so greas free? After every 3 butts I get the putty knife out and chip the burnt fat off by the pound! Yours looks like it was never used. And as for the other grill in question it’s not a PitBoss. It may need enameled or stainless grates jut a good seasoning and a few cooks and it will be in great shape.

Eat as much rust as you like.

I just got my 820 sportsman and noticed surface rust on the sear plate area where it slides back and forth. It is a concern and I seasoned it well. cooking today and plan on putting olive oil on thick before and after I cook today. I dont know what else to do. It is just the metal used to make these. replacing them after a few years or when they rust out might not be that expensive. I have to replace my burner tubes in my propane grill every 3 years cause they rust out.
Olive oil doess well, peanut oil has a higher heat/slast point, I wipe down after every use, no rust and the meat taste great

I can’t believe people try to keep up with these girls like it’s a classic car painting and sanding this is ridiculous these things are made with cheap metal and rust out horribly I’ve never paid so much money for such a piece of garbage that rusted out so fast in my life I have put it in the same place I have been putting grills for years in my yard and I have never had one rust out so fast
That is how I feel also, people are justifying buying these things by saying it is no big deal but it is. For me Pit Boss is just taking us to the rust bin.

Yes I had some $200 Char Broils that rusted out after 3 years, but this should not be after less than a year. The slide costs $65.00 do not know what the broiler plate is.
It's metallurgy, intense heat on carbon steel mixed with salty juices. Some smoker manufacturers are selling stainless steel replacements.
Those pieces of plate are getting red/orange hot. Those plates are "consumables " if they aren't stainless steel or another exotic metal.

I wipe it off best I can, spray it down, crank up the heat and turn down to temp then keep on smokin!! My flavorisers shields are 16 years old and rusted on the surface in my costco grill but it just keeps on grillin just fine. The grates need to stay free of rust and not touch the food. your not really burning the rust into the food its just there. Campsight grates are all rusted so I take a grill grate with me to put my food on.

I actually use my smoker for smoking. I quit using "gas grills" from local stores long ago. Instead, I bought a eight burner restaurant grill for grilling. When I need/desire smoke or a wood fired grill flavor I place a split piece of oak between the burners and let it rock! I purchased my grill at restaurant auction for $125.00. It gets hot as h e double L in no time! I do need a cover but not to get the temp up!

my broiler cover and drip pan/sear plate both have lots of surface rust and have since early on. I don't think they're actually going to fall apart or sauce a real issue anytime soon, and I'm grilling 2 or 3 times a week year round. Not quite at a year yet, I'd love to buy replacements out of 316 steel, which would possibly last forever (Titanium would be cool, but not worth the expense). I saw a stainless replacement somewhere, I think Amazon, but there were complaints about warping and I'm sure I'd get them too because I like to run my grill as hot as I can when searing.

At the price I paid, my 700FB has been excellent. It is capable of doing a decent job of almost anything I can think of and room enough to cook for a party or family or maybe work. the rust isn't very enticing but hot grills with acid/water/salt/iron (from heme, foremost) will break down most steels that aren't rather specialized and I'd have to have paid more for a more premium steel. I would buy the parts now iff the price wasn't crazy, but for now, I'm just going to cook on this thing indefinitely.

I have a 700 series with some age on it. I made a defuser out of 3/16 carbon steel plate 8 inches square. I suspended it under the grease shield plate about 2 " above the burn pot. I used 2 1/4-20 machine screws with wing nuts. I do not do much searing / grilling on my unit but if I did it only takes 2-3 minutes to Uninstaller.
I will eventually make a better defuser or buy one that holds wood chunks (that add additional smoke).
The suspended plates moderates the hot spot immediately above the slide plate as well.
