I'm new here and picked up a pitboss pro 4 onyx edition. Coming from a electric chip master grill. Anyone else using this model or anything similar? Would love to hear some feedback on it so far not too impressed

Welcome to the forum from Southwest Louisiana. I my self came from electric smoker had a real good handle on the ribs cooking technique. It also was and still is a new learning curve for me with my vertical smoker. But I'm learning the ins and outs of the smoker and want to improve it if possible. My first cook was 6 racks of ribs, used my same prep as before cooked the same amount of time as before. They came out good but not as good as before I knew then I was going to have to adjust my process.

Pnv4nx is the model # for the unit I purchased. Thanks for all the greetings! The unit is great looking and seems to work well and for the price I really cannot complain. Need to master the use of the system. Used only a few times so far. Is everyone happy with their vertical pitboss pellet smokers? Would love to know any diy upgrades, tricks,tips and favorite pellets.

I'm a fan of the Bear Mountain pellets.

I saw a few people recommended the best mountain brand pellets...did 2 smokes with them so far (pork butt and a brisket)and still very very mild smoke flavor.

I've looked into those pellet tubes and that seems like an idea to try. Is this really the way to get good smoky flavor? Almost wondering if I need a different smoker entirely

Both taste good and came out great but the smoky flavor is very very light, much more light than my electric chip smoker

A smoker is just that, a smoker. Thats what it does. Smokes constantly while slowly cooking the food.

A pellet grill is a grill that uses wood pellets to cook food, but has the ability to add smoke flavor.

Pellets can impart smoke flavor but will not do it as much as wood chips/chunks in a smoker.

A smoke tube will add more smoke flavor but maybe not equal an actual smoker.


These are just my thoughts on the differencs between the two.
