Mine always pushes air into the burn pot area. My wires burned up when the fire burned back into the area under the auger behind the burn pot.
This pic shows the orientation of the fan, but it is moved off to the side. The image is upside down though. I took the door off and the stack, then turned the smoker upside-down to make the work easy. The fan wires were rerouted, so they do not pass through the area by the auger and burn pot.
The smoker shut down when I was away from the house running an errand and burned back through the hopper. I'm not sure what happened to cause it. I know there was not a power outage (I have UPSs that will report even a fraction of a second power loss).
One thing I've noticed is that there were pellets outside the burn pot under the auger tube. I now ensure there are no pellets laying inside the channel behind the pot, under the auger tube. My thinking is that when pulling the burn pot to dump it, pellets can drop from the auger tube and build up behind the burn pot. If you roll the smoker about while the pot is pulled out, pellets can drop out. Do this a few times and pellets accumulate and could begin to burn and melt the wires, or more. I suppose the auger could over-feed the pot and pellets could spill out the ventilation holes, too.
My final resolution has been to ensure there are no pellets in the area under the auger every time I remove and reinsert the burn pot. That along with routing the fan wires outside the area with the auger and burn pot are an improvement is reducing risk of having a fire in the wrong places. I haven't had any issues since.
