Heat Deflector/ Airgap Mod?

Yea sir… it works as advertised.
I bought the heat deflector but I didn’t work with my 1250CS because my burn pot is mounted underneath the cook chamber. A flat plate might work better for me. I also bought the air gap shield. it didn’t match the curve of my deflector plate but I still use it; rather than fitting underneath, it fits against the edge of my deflector plate. I now notice a 50 degree difference between the left and right sides. Not sure which is worse, with or without the air gap shield.

This may have been mentioned in a previous post, but I can't find anything after searching the forums. Does anyone know if there is an airgap mod available for purchase that fits the PB850CS1 (from Academy Sports) model ? If not, I'll go the foil route.

Thank you, Dago. Was going to purchase that but I don't see my model (PB Competition 850) listed. Has anyone confirmed this will fit the 850 ?

Hey Jcsparky, just a FYI, my pb 850 is going on 2+ years and they must have changed the configuration because my airgap is curved from the factory.
Yep, on my 850, purchased last week from Academy Sports, the airgap is not curved. Not sure if you have the Competition Series from Academy or the Pro Series from Lowe's, but it could be a difference between these two models or they simply changed the build since you purchased your 850.

Anyway, I did use foil last night to close the airgap and did notice my grill/grate surface temperatures were reading much closer to what the grill was reading. I went from L (low smoke), 225, 250, 275 and 300, all reading very similar to what the grill was reading.

Per a recommendation from another thread, I did remove the guard over the grill's internal temperature probe which probably had an affect as well.

Appreciate everyone's input.

I took that temp guard off the other day to give the probe a cleaning and it never occurred to me leave it off. I should try that myself maybe it will help even things out on mine as well...i bought the SmokesLikeABoss mod, doesn't seem like its done much overall and the owner is an ahole. I should have just used foil. lol

Thermocouples only read at the very tip and don't like being bent especially after being heated up several cycles. If your careful and know you won't hit/bend it. It might help.
Since I keep my deflector covered in foil. I just stuff that end with foil.

After reading a few of these comments and suggestions I went and bought one on amazon. For $54 this is what I got, it looks really well built, have not used but fits perfectly, The slots lined up with the shield and holds in in place, no more air gap at all on the temperature sensor end. I have no affiliation at all but wanted to share. This is the amazon title :

SUPROJDM New Stainless Steel Heat Conduction Plate air Gap Module. Suitable for PB XL/Pro 1100 etc.

I have a PB 1100 PSC2 ( the combo pellet and gas unit side by side )

Anyone here use the Heat Deflector/ Airgap Mod from SmokesLikeABoss or something similar to block the gap between the curved heat diffuser and the flat ledge it sits on? Does it really work as stated? It makes sense to me that the hot air would rise out through that gap and affect the temp probe, but I have not tested it.
I have done that modification as well as the fire pot diffuser. They both have improved my overall temperature fluctuation problems

I have a angle grinder with a cutting wheel so I fabricated my own out of one of my wives cookie sheets !!! (she doesn't know yet that I sacrificed one of her cookie sheets ) and yes it works !!! keeps barrel temps nice and stable !!!
This could be my last post once she discovers the cookie sheet missing, any suggestions on how to explain the missing cookie sheet ?

Solly, you are on your own there man. No help here 'cause I wouldn't go there so have no recovery from it. Good luck, hope it wasn't her FAVORITE cookie sheet. 🍻
