Any chance you can take a pic of what you are referring to?KP33,
The drip pan/ sear plate that goes from left to right has a compound radius with the left hand being larger, the right hand being tighter. Also it is sloped down being lower on the right.
So as you move his shield on the X axis, the gap between his shield increases or decreases the gap on the Y axis from underneath.
So, if moving the shield to the left hand side, there is a greater gap between the shield and the drip pan/sear plate to allow more flow to the left hand side of the grilling area from the firepot. Move to the right hand side, it closes the gap/ maybe even making contact depending on his design, which would force the flow from the fire pot to the right hand side of the grilling area, Think of it as a damper.
But that’s a piece you created and made on your own correct it did not come with the Pit Boss rightWhen I move it to the left, it allows more heat to travel to the left, when I move it to the right it stops the heat from traveling to the left.
The 'GAP' under the broiler plate increases when the shield is moved to the left and decreases when moved to the right.
yes, I made that piece, the Heat Shield and adjusting rod.But that’s a piece you created and made on your own correct it did not come with the Pit Boss right
Got ya I’m not that handy lolyes, I made that piece, the Heat Shield and adjusting rod.
Sorry Kp33, I do not own a Pit Boss grill/smoker or I wouldAny chance you can take a pic of what you are referring to?
What is it sliding up and down over I don’t think my PB even has thatyes, I made that piece, the Heat Shield and adjusting rod.
I have seen this mod, but I don't have a pic. It's simply a piece of metal a bit bigger than your firepot that is bent in an upside down "U" shape and fits over the firepot and under the heat deflector to add an extra layer of heat deflection. It is rigged to slide out of the way when you want to use your sear plate. I doubt there would be any other reason to slide it back and forth.I was hoping the Original poster would have replied back about the request to see his heat diffuser mod... and I’ve requested twice. I don’t believe in high jacking someone’s posting... Hopefully we’ll see his mod in the near future. I did a heat diffuser mod on my Austin XL a little over a year ago that’s been very effective. I’ll start a different thread with details and pictures for anyone that’s interested.

So on your grill the left gets hotter than the right I assume that’s why when it’s close to the fire pot it’s less heat to left side and the more you slide it the more heat goes to the left, on my 1150 my right side is always hotter. So here is my Adjustable Heat Shield (patent pending) for the PB850PS2
I know it has been a while but I have been testing and I forget to take pics when my grill is open for cleaning, just like I forget to take pics of my finished cooks.
You slide it to the right to block heat from going to the left, slide it to the left to allow heat to go to the left.
I take advantage of the shape and slant of the broiler plate to control the heat.
The more you move it to the left, the more the 'gap' opens between the broiler plate and shield allowing more heat to the left.
