I may be away for a bit

That sux, any severance pay? I went through that13 years ago when the place relocated in China, I had 30 years in, over 650 of us lost great paying jobs.
Yes, severance package will be available. My biggest concern is insurance because I have a diabetic child who needs insulin and there is no way I could afford it without insurance. I have some feelers out within the company and hope to stay somewhere in the Southeast. We've had issues here for a while with high costs but it comes as a huge shock to everyone. The product we make (paper) will be moved to other mills in the US. More than likely this place will be torn down and something else will be here but I don't have time to wait around and see what happens.

It's tough changing jobs after all these years and being 51 years old.

With in the past year a major paper products mill shut down here in the county. It was there for decades.

I feel your pain. Is Cobra available? That may work temporarily. I thought I read something in the works to lower insulin costs.

We had a dog on insulin and found WalMart to have the best price. Don't remember the brand name but we didn't even need a prescription which seemed odd..

Good luck.

Yeah that insulin is based on a formula from about 70 years ago. That kind would be dangerous for my daughter so we are stuck with the high priced stuff.

I have an interview this morning via Zoom with a plant in Washington state but I am not to keen on moving my family across the US like that, especially with a daughter in college. I have some other interviews set up as well but will have to see how this one goes this morning. Cost of living in Washington state is almost double my area (housing).

Dang @MikeInFla - Sorry to hear the news. I hope the best for you and your family. There seem to be a lot of job opportunities out here in the Austin area. Cost of living is getting out of control though :(

Yeah cost of living is going up everywhere. Had a promising interview yesterday and it is a very desirable position (with my same company so I would keep benefits). But it would require a cross country move, about as far away from Florida as you can get!

Benefits are my main goal because I have a diabetic daughter and she needs insulin.

I have another interview today with a competing company in Texas (but nowhere near Austin -- Texas is pretty huge!).

Good luck with the interview. I moved to Texas 38 years ago from New York City and have not looked back.

Hello all,

I may not be active on here for a few months. I am losing my job. After 92 years in business my facility is closing. The plant closes June 6.

WestRock Panama City closing

You can read at link above. So now I am job hunting and will probably have to move out of state. I do have some opportunities lined up to remain in the company so that is what I am going to pursue.

I'll check in when time allows but right now I'm in survival mode.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

Sorry to hear about that my friend. Hopeful you find job soon. You have good experience, shouldn’t be too hard for you. God bless

When one door closes another will open up
Good luck in the future

Been there 19 years. I work in the Lab (paper testing) and I am the trainer for the area (train new employees). I have some other titles as well but this is a shock to our family and community. Chances are I will move away. I'll know more next week, prob Wednesday should know.

If I stay with the company there will be no lapse of insurance so that's my main goal. Will just be hard to move away, live alone and have my wife and daughters in Florida
Tough pill to swallow Mike!! Sorry to hear your plant is closing. Have to believe that there is something better for you in the future!!

A few interviews lined up, both require a move. They are interviews with my same company which is positive because benefits, seniority, etc would just continue. Pay is higher as well so we will see. One interview is clear across the country but I know I can do that job because it is pretty much what I do now, just a salary position instead of hourly.

Well that sounds positive, maybe not ideal, but definitely offering hope as far as financial matters. Hang in there, take time step back now and then and fire up the smoker.
